James Garrard day book, circa 1812.

The James Garrard day book is a small (7" X 4") bound book containing lists of goods, records of transactions, figures, and religious observations. Some of the transactions are dated from 1812, and include land transfers, money lent to his children, rents collected, and goods sold and received. Other parties in transactions include recognizable figures in Kentucky history, including Lewis Craig, Col. William Thompson, members of the Metcalf family, Hawkins family, and his wife's family, the Mountjoys. Garrard's religious observations constitute the bulk of notations in the day book, and include quotations from scripture, reasoning behind the Socianist doctrine that Garrard espoused, and religious philosophy. A descendant of James Garrard included a notation that reads "book of great-great-grandpa Garrard, second governor of Kentucky, serving two terms," as well as an illustrated postcard of Mt. Lebanon, the historic Garrard residence just outside of Paris, Kentucky.
